Thule car roofbox range

Available roofboxes in the Thule range

There are three model ranges made by Thule when it comes to car roofboxes: the Spirit is the top of the range, followed by the Atlantic and the Pacific. One important thing to bear in mind is that the model numbers do not match the capacities of the roofboxes, so look carefully before selecting a roofbox for your car.

The capacities range from a maximum of 650 litres (the same as a large estate boot space) down to a small car boot equivalent of 330 litres.

In terms of reviews and quality, Thule boxes are known for their stylish design which in the top models includes special aerodynamic features to minimise drag and noise while driving. There are also dual side opening roofboxes which makes them very convenient, together with easy fitting.

Of course, you pay for this sophistication, so if you are just looking for an occasional roofbox, perhaps an own brand might be a better option.

The Thule Atlantis

This is a range of 4 roofbox sizes in silver and black gloss options, with classic style and top features to suit a range of cars. They have aerodynamic benefits built in to give stability, reduce wind and air resistance, keep noise down and minimise vibration at higher speeds.

Like the top model, the Thule Atlantis also has dual side opening which helps with both loading and unloading your roofbox, especially when you don't know where you are going to be doing it and how much space you'll have around the car.

Mounting the roofbox is easy, as it has the easy one handed method of just turning knobs inside the roofbox to tighten the clamps which hold it onto the roof rack bars.

It also has the central lock and again the key can't be removed until all locking points are closed.

Sizes available are: Thule Atlantis 600 at 340 litres; Altantis 200 at 440 litres; Atlantis 780 at 480 litres and the Atlantis 900 at 650 litres.

Prices range from around £310 to £450 depending on the size of the roofbox.

Thule Pacific roofboxes

This is what you might call a basic range from Thule in 5 sizes in silver grey, although still with many of the features that go with the higher priced models of roofbox. Although they don't have the full aero design, the base has been kept low to reduce air resistance and they also have a quick mount system used from inside the box.

One of the main differences with this range is that they are single side opening, which of course may not be a bother to you if you have plenty of space to work with. If you are going to use a roofbox often, its probably worth checking how easily and how far you can reach across your car; if this is an issue, then a dual side opening box might be better.

Sizes available are: the Thule Pacific 500 at 330 litres, the Pacific 600 at 340 litres, the Pacific 100 at 370 litres and the Pacific 200 and 700 both at 460 litres.

Prices range from around £200 to £300 again depending on size and there is an anthracite colour option with the 600 and 700 models.

Spirit car roofbox from Thule

These are the top of the range featuring advanced aerodynamic design which includes spoilers and air channels through the roofbox shell to minimise noise, drag and vibration while you are driving. On long journeys this not only reduces fuel consumption, but also removes the fatiguing and possibly irritating noises associated with higher speeds.

The last thing you want is people complaining that they can't hear the car stereo or the dvd because of the roofbox !

This model is available in two sizes: the Thule 780 at 380 litres and the Thule 820 at 480 litres at prices around £540 and £650 respectively. There's also a choice of three colours with black gloss, silver metallic and anthracite.

For mounting these roofboxes onto your car there is also a quick system which works with just one hand. Although it doesn't sound that important, if you are off to the coast every few weekends, the process of fiddling around with U bolts could become quite annoying, so the Thule system will make quite a difference.

Other features include dual side opening, which is really useful as you don't have to reach all the way across the roofbox to get things out and if you could only get into your garage from one side, then obviously loading is going to be easier as well. These Thule boxes have a central lock and the key can't be taken out until all locking points are closed.

Dimensions are: 196x78x33 for the Thule Spirit 780 and 230x82x36 for the Thule Spirit 820, both with a weight load of 75kg and room for 6-8 skis / snowboards.

Prices range from around £500 to £700.
